John the Baptist saw Jesus and said to the crowd, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world! He’s the one I told you about! God told me the person I see the Holy Spirit rest upon like a dove is the chosen one. And I saw the Spirit rest upon Jesus.”
Two of John’s disciples heard this and started to follow Jesus.
Jesus asked them, “What are you looking for?”
They replied, “Rabbi, teacher, where are you staying?
Jesus said, “Come and see.”
One of these disciples brought his brother Simon to meet Jesus.
Jesus said, “You are Simon, son of John. From now on you will be called Cephas.” Which means Peter.
Then Jesus saw Philip in the village of Galilee and said, “Come Philip, follow me.”
Philip listened. He found his friend Nathaniel sitting beneath a fig tree and said, “We found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about! It’s Jesus, from Nazareth!”
Nathaniel was surprised, “Nazareth? Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
Philip said, “Come find out!”
Jesus saw Nathaniel and said, “Look! A true and genuine Israelite.”
Nathaniel asked, “How do you know me?”
Jesus replied, “I saw you. Even before Philip found you beneath the fig tree.”
Nathanael said, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God, the true King of Israel!”
Jesus asked, “Do you believe simply because I told you I saw you beneath the fig tree? You will see greater things than this. You will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
