Cleaning the Temple radio transcript

It’s time to Hear the Word! Our reading is adapted from John, Chapter 2 Verses 13-25, titled, Cleansing the Temple, read by Brynn, age 6. Now, let’s Hear the Word, together!

The Jewish Passover celebration was near and Jesus entered the temple of Jerusalem. The temple was meant to be a holy place of worship and prayer, but Jesus found people selling animals and exchanging money.

Jesus used strands of cord to create a whip and used it to drive all of the sales people, and their animals, out of God’s temple. Jesus poured out the money changers’ coins and flipped over the tables.

“Get these things out of here! Stop turning my father’s house into a marketplace!”

Jesus’ disciples watched and remembered that long ago, it was written in the Scriptures, “Zeal, and passion, for God’s house will consume me.”

Some of the Jews approached Jesus and asked, “What sign will you show us to prove your authority? ”

Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it up in three days.”

The Jews replied, “Raise it up in three days? Three days?! This temple took 46 years to build. And you think you can do it in 3 days?

But Jesus was speaking about the temple of his body, not the temple they were standing in. Jesus meant that after death he would raise himself back to life in 3 days.

Many people in Jerusalem believed in Jesus when they saw the signs he was doing. But Jesus did not entrust himself to them, for he knew what was in each person’s heart.

“Jesus answered, ‘Destroy this temple, and I will raise it up in three days.’”

John 2:19 (CSB)

Takeaway

This Bible reading was adapted from John, Chapter 2 Verses 13-25. As we heard, it upset Jesus to see people treating the temple of God in a disrespectful way . That’s because Jesus had reverence for the things of God. To have reverence means to have deep respect. It’s important for us to have reverence for what is important to God, just like Jesus.
