Lesson 1: Jesus’ Ascension Exalts Him as King

Jesus’ ascension to heaven establishes Him as the exalted King over all creation, reigning at God’s right hand, as seen in Acts 1:9-11. 3 Ascension of Jesus Christ Craft Activities

Craft 1: Jesus Ascends Cloud Tunnel

What You Need: White construction paper, empty tissue box (or paper towel tube), scissors, glue, markers, string, cotton balls, glitter.

  1. Cut white construction paper into cloud shapes and glue cotton balls on them for a fluffy effect.
  2. Decorate the tissue box (or paper towel tube, cut lengthwise with openings at both ends) with blue paper and glue clouds around the outside.
  3. Draw and cut out a figure of Jesus in a robe from white paper, adding details with markers.
  4. Thread a long string through the tissue box, attaching the Jesus figure to one end.
  5. Pull the string to make Jesus “ascend” through the cloud-covered tunnel.

Why It Helps: The tunnel craft vividly recreates Jesus ascending through clouds, reinforcing the hope of His heavenly reign and return.

Craft 2: Holy Spirit Flame Collage

What You Need: Red, orange, and yellow construction paper, scissors, glue, markers, glitter, cardstock.

  1. Cut a large flame shape from cardstock as the base.
  2. Cut smaller flame shapes from red, orange, and yellow construction paper, layering them to create a vibrant, multi-colored flame effect.
  3. Write words like “Power,” “Holy Spirit,” or “Witness” on the smaller flames with markers.
  4. Add glitter to mimic the fiery glow of the Spirit, and glue the flames onto the base.
  5. Display the collage to represent the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Fun Fact About the Story

The Ascension took place on the Mount of Olives, a significant location where Jesus often taught and prayed. In Jewish tradition, the Mount was associated with God’s glory, and the cloud that received Jesus echoed the cloud of God’s presence in the Old Testament, like the one that led Israel in the wilderness. This would have amazed the disciples, showing Jesus’ divine authority as He ascended to heaven.

The Mount of Olives was not only a place of teaching but also held significance in Jewish thought, as prophets like Zechariah foretold the Messiah’s return to this very spot (Zechariah 14:4). The disciples, witnessing Jesus ascend from this sacred hill, would have been struck by the fulfillment of God’s promises and the assurance that Jesus, now exalted, would one day return in glory. This connection deepens the story’s impact, showing kids that Jesus’ ascension is both a historical event and a promise of His triumphant second coming.
