It’s time to Hear the Word! Our reading is adapted from John, Chapter 5 Verses 1-18, titled, Pick Up Your Mat, read by Elise, age 9. Now, let’s Hear the Word, together!

Jesus went to a festival in Jerusalem. Nearby was the pool of Bethesda, which had five colonnades where people in need of healing would lay in the water.

A man who had been suffering from an illness for thirty-eight years was by the pool.

Jesus saw the man and knew he had been there a long time. Jesus said to him, “Do you want to get well?”

“Yes sir, but I can’t,” the man answered, “I have no one to put me in the pool when the water is stirred. I try but other people get in ahead of me.”

Jesus replied, “Stand up, pick up your mat and walk!”

Instantly, the man became well. He picked up his mat and started to walk.

This happened on the Sabbath, the day of rest. The Jewish leaders saw the healed man and said, “Today is the Sabbath! The law says you cannot pick up your mat on the Sabbath!”

The healed man replied, “The person who made me well told me to pick up my mat and walk.”

“Who is the man who told you to pick up your mat and walk?” they asked. But the healed man didn’t know because Jesus had disappeared into the crowd.

Later, Jesus saw the man in the temple, and said, “See, you are well! Sin no more so that something worse than before doesn’t happen to you.”

The man went and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who made him well. The leaders began to persecute Jesus because they believed he broke the Sabbath law.

Jesus said to the Jewish leaders, “My Father is still at work, and so am I.” Hearing this, they wanted to kill Jesus more than ever. Because now he was calling God his own father, making himself equal to God.

“When Jesus saw him lying there and realized he had already been there a long time, he said to him, ‘Do you want to get well? ‘”

Takeaway

This Bible reading was adapted from John, Chapter 5 verses 1-18. The story reminds us to focus on where God is at work. While the religious leaders were angry that a man carried his mat on the Sabbath, they missed the fact that God was at work healing the sick. Remember, God is still at work. Where are you seeing God’s work in
